Kaleidescape, Inc. is an American multimedia company headquartered in Mountain View, California. Established in 2001, the company specialises in designing multi-room home entertainment server systems. These systems store and play back video and audio content, such as films, TV shows, and music, to movie players that can be connected to televisions or projectors.

History and Key Developments:

Founding and Early History (2001-2014): Kaleidescape was founded by Michael Malcolm, Dan Collens, and Cheena Srinivasan. The company initially focused on creating home theatre movie servers that stored digital copies of customers’ DVD and Blu-ray collections. Their first movie server, launched in 2003, allowed users to import DVD content onto hard drives and sort films using the company's movie guide database.

Legal Challenges: In 2004, the DVD Copy Control Association sued Kaleidescape over breach of contract, claiming that its movie servers did not have permission to serve DVDs from copies on hard disk. However, by 2019, Kaleidescape had secured license agreements with 29 studios for content purchase and download from its movie store.

Blu-ray Integration (2010-2014): In 2010, the company introduced its M300 and M500 Blu-ray players. These players had the capability to copy Blu-rays, DVDs, and CDs onto home servers. To address copyright concerns, Kaleidescape required the Blu-ray disc to be present during playback from the server. The company also launched the industry's first Blu-ray server, which could store and stream copies of Blu-ray films throughout a home.

Online Movie Store: Kaleidescape's online movie store, launched in 2013, allowed users to add high-definition and standard-definition movies to their collections instantly. The store was the first to enable users to download Blu-ray quality movies via an internet-based platform.

Recent Developments (2015-present): In 2015, Kaleidescape introduced the Strato movie player and the Terra movie server. The Strato is a playback device that can store Ultra 4K HDR movies as well as DVD quality films. The Terra provides computing and caching services to enhance the Strato's performance and offers additional storage for movies purchased from the store. In November 2020, Tayloe Stansbury was appointed as Kaleidescape's CEO.
